The Xbox 360 Elite game console will be made $100 cheaper this week. As of this Friday it will sell for $299 (or €249). That is an HD device with a 120GB hard drive for the price of a Wii! The Xbox 360 Arcade version, which does not have a built-in hard drive, remains at its current price of $199 (€175). This happens shortly after the recent $100 price drop for the Playstation 3.
Sony drop
Along with the price drop, Sony is now trying to make up for the disappointing sales of the PS3 with a marketing campaign to reposition the console as more of an all-in-one entertainment device because of its ability to play Blu-ray DVDs. This year, Xbox sales are the only console in positive growth in the US, rising by 17%.
Overall score
Microsoft has sold more than 30 million Xbox 360s worldwide since it introduced the second-generation game console in November 2005. Sony has sold 24 million PS3 consoles in the same time, while Nintendo Co. has moved roughly 52 million Wii consoles since launching the device in November 2006. The winner of the battle for the next step in DVD seems to be Blu-Ray. Much like the battle between VHS and Betamax in the 80’s, for the past 2 years a war was fought between HD-DVD (supported by Microsoft, NEC and Intel) and Blu-Ray (supported by Sony and Apple). Both high-definition formats wanted to be the next disc containing your HD movies. Obviously, to win this war, the support of the movie studios is crucial - without movies, no disc sales. Adobe, the software company behind the Flash video player, has announced that the latest version of Flash will support HD (high-definition) video in the the H.264 video format. This means that Web video will be able to have television quality. Soon everyone will be able to watch high definition video content playing in webpages. Mind you, you will only start to actually see better video quality when video makers start to encode their videos with H.264.

Sony plans to release a digital TV tuner which will turn the PS3 games console into a digital tuner and video recorder. The news was revealed in a New Zealand newspaper. Next year a free DVB-T digital television service will launch in New Zealand, which would mean that the PS3 could be the only device needed to watch and record digital television, together with a satellite dish or aerial. This could pose a real threat to cable TV. It is unclear if the device will be able to record in HD.

Microsoft has announced extension of warranty for the Xbox360 from one-year to three-years. The announcement comes in response to an unusually high number of Xbox 360 failures. This means a massive extra cost being taken by Microsoft of about 1.15 billion dollars, to right the wrongs of the shipped Xboxes. Wow. But OK, Microsoft shows it takes the Xbox360 and its’ customers seriously.
What’s wrong?
The reported problems are usually described as the “red ring of death”, as shown on the image accompanying this article, a red ring on the front of the console around the power button. Once the red ring is there the Xbox stops responding. This problem is caused by overheating of the Xbox360 and is usually permanent, meaning that the unit will have to be sent back to be repaired. According to Xbox hardware fan sites Microsoft is fixing these problems by placing an additional heatsink near system’s GPU. A cooler GPU should help solve these problems, so the bitter pill might just be the cure…

Mocht het je nog niet opgevallen zijn, de Playstation 3 is dan eindelijk geland in Europa. In Belgie was dat vrij gemakkelijk te missen, de enige plek waar ik persoonlijk bereikt ben met deze boodschap was in de Carrefour, waar een maand lang een stem het publiek in de supermarkt opriep om het apparaat tijdig te reserveren. Weinig marketinginspanningen van Sony verder, kennelijk.

Wordt de opvolger van de DVD de Blu-Ray of HD-DVD disc? Terwijl de meeste techno-watchers nog ingespannen zitten te wachten op de afloop van deze strijd heeft de grootste innoverende kracht van de media deze schijfjes al afgeschreven. Zelfs de DVD is al een gepasseerd station. De strijd tussen VHS en Beta werd beslist door porno, het internet werd er groot door, maar de disc hoeft niet op al teveel hulp meer te rekenen. De DVD wordt nog wel ondersteund, maar de nieuwe generatie discs zal het zonder de help van de porno industrie moeten zien te redden.

Microsoft voegt PVR en IPTV functionaliteit toe aan de Xbox 360. Daarmee wordt de Xbox 360 dus een IPTV set-top box, een apparaat waarmee je digitaal televisie kunt kijken en opnemen. Tijdens de keynote speech op de CES beurs in Las Vegas vannacht toonde Robbie Bach, die de Keynote samen deed met Bill Gates, hoe een aantal onderdelen van deze service eruit zullen gaan zien. De Xbox kan live streaming broadcast TV tonen en bijvoorbeeld opnemen terwijl je via Xbox live online een spel speelt. IPTV zal eind dit jaar officieel gelanceerd worden. Er is tegen die tijd ook een HD-DVD drive beschikbaar voor de Xbox.

Het Koreaanse LG Electronics onthulde zondag bij het begin van de editie 2007 van de CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas de “Super Multi Blue“, (voor in de PC) en de BH-100 (voor onder de TV), de eerste spelers die zowel Blu-ray Discs als de concurrerende HD DVD schijven af kunnen spelen. “Customers are not really sure which format player they want to buy and naturally seem reluctant to buy the player or DVD contents,” aldus Michael Ahn, President en CEO van LG North America. Ik weet het. Ik beloof dat dit voorlopig de laatste Playstation post is. Maar toch: Sony heeft een nieuwe software update (inmiddels versie 3.01) uitgebracht voor de Playstation Portable (PSP). Deze nieuwe versie biedt een van de twee grote vernieuwingen die ik een half jaar geleden voorspelde: je kunt hiermee de Playstation Portable gebruiken als afstandsbediening voor de Playstation 3.

De Sony Playstation 3 console werd de afgelopen week voor het eerst verkocht in de Japanse en Amerikaanse winkels. De Europese fans zullen nog even moeten wachten, de lancering hier vindt waarschijnlijk maart 2007 plaats. De Playstation 3 heeft als belangrijke features online gameplay, een ingebouwde harddisk van 20 of 60 GB, een Blu-Ray speler en een echte HDMI uitgang (in tegenstelling tot de Xbox), zodat de machine ook gebruikt kan worden om de nieuwste generatie films in HD te bekijken op een HD-ready scherm. De eerste Blu-Ray speler moet nog uitkomen, maar Toshiba heeft de 2e generatie HD-DVD speler al aangekondigd. De Amerikaanse markt gaat veroverd worden met twee modellen, de instapper HD-A2 en de higher-end HD-XA2. Deze week start het nieuwe Nederlandse tv-seizoen. Eindelijk is er weer iets anders te zien dan beschimmelde herhalingen van Charlie’s Angels en Barbapapa. Op de E3-gamebeurs in Los Angeles heeft Sony onthuld hoeveel de PlayStation 3 gaat kosten en in welke configuraties de spelconsole beschikbaar zal zijn. Als puber kun je maar beter een krantenwijk en een weekendbaan naast je vakantiewerk nemen, want er zal minimaal 499 euro betaald moeten worden in november. Sony neemt hiermee een enorm risico; de PS3 wordt hiermee aanzienlijk duurder dan de grote rivaal, de Xbox 360. De Microsoft-console ligt bij ons ‘kaal’ in de winkel vanaf 299 euro, voor 399 koop je een complete versie. Ik denk dat 499 euro voor een PS3 een prijsniveau is waar een hoop consumenten zullen afhaken.

Panasonic begint na de zomer met de verkoop van Blu-Ray spelers. Blu-Ray is de opvolger van DVD, met een veel grotere opslagruimte en dus meer mogelijkheden voor bijvoorbeeld speelfilms en HD content. Panasonic zal niet alleen losse spelers produceren, maar ook spelers voor in PC’s en spelcomputers. In totaal denkt Panasonic er het eerste jaar een kleine 5 miljoen te verkopen.
Duur.
De consumentenprijs van een losse speler is, net zoals bij het begin van de DVD speler, enorm. Ooit is de DVD speler bij het grote publiek geintroduceerd als een apparaat van 1500 gulden, inmiddels is het Kruidvat niet eens meer de goedkoopste met spelers van 70 euro. Hetzelfde gaat nu opnieuw gebeuren met Blu-Ray: een losse Panasonic speler komt waarschijnlijk op zo’n 1400 euro.
Standaard?
Blu-ray heeft ook nog een behoorlijke concurrent in het rivaliserende HD-DVD formaat dat onder andere door Microsoft, Intel en NEC als standaard wordt gepushed. Er komt weer een ouderwetse oorlog aan tussen deze HD-DVD partijen en het Blu-Ray kamp, dat met klinkende namen op het gebied van hardware als Apple, Dell, HP, LG, JVC, Sony, Philips, Panasonic en Sharp en filmmaatschappijen Warner, Paramount, Disney, Sony, en MGM voorlopig toch de beste kaarten lijkt te hebben.
