Today, Steve Jobs announced the iPad. A new device from Apple that tries to invent it’s own category. It’s basically a Netbook/E-reader device with a 27 cm. diagonal screen. Some people refer to it as a a juiced-up iPhone. The prices start at $499 for the 16 GB version, but an internet connection other than Wifi will cost you another $130 per year (!).
Design, Screen, Graphics.
The overall look is slick, and it’s wafer thin at about 1,5 cm, but I’m somewhat disappointed it has such a thick border around the screen. Also the screen is Read on…

Nielsen published the report “How Teens Use Media” this week, a report on the “myths and realities of teen media trends ”. It’s a good read, showing that the American Teenager is more conservative in his (or her) media choice than some fast-talking online media experts would have you believe.
Dad knows best
Some of the most interesting points from the research are around the choice of medium, but the media consulted still are pretty much in line with parental choice. In the end “teens” is the word we use for a part of the demographic that is just about to start making their own unique choices, but are in fact still mostly following the lead of their parents.
Report Highlights:
- For TV, American teens today actually watch Read on…

Apple® today introduced the new iPhone™ 3G S, according to Apple “the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet”. This thing was pretty much conceived while Steve Jobs was either very ill or had already left the office for his sick leave. As such, it offers us a first glimpse of what life without Jobs could be like for Apple. Interesting. Let’s take a look at the new features.
Big features
The 2 really big features of this new iPhone are improved speed —up to twice as fast as the last iPhone, according to Apple —and longer battery life. I will be VERY interested in seeing Read on…

The American online music service SpiralFrog that was free to use, missed a critical lily pad this week and has shut down as a result of its debts. The Ad-funded US service signed deals with EMI and Universal some time ago but failed to secure deals with Sony or Warner.
Spiralfrog closed its operation yesterday, unable to pay back a ten million dollar loan in convertible notes. The DRM-protected music service allowed fans to download and play tracks to their computers with a video advert appearing before each play.
Ad-funded model under pressure
Spiralfrog is the second ad-funded music service to Read on…

25 minutes ago, Peter Vandermeersch, General Editor in Chief and General Director of Flemish quality newspaper De Standaard and Belgian Marketeer of the year 2008, gave a keynote speech at the Digital News Affairs 2009 event in Brussels. Here is a more or less verbatim version of his story:
First; some facts
Newspaper sales are up for De Standaard and, in fact, all the “quality papers” in Flanders. Populist paper Het Nieuwsblad is declining somewhat. De Standaard reaches about 750.000 Flemish readers daily, or 15% of the populace.

Working for Microsoft, a question that I get frequently is “How is Microsoft going to still be relevant in 10 years time?”. The answer to that question arrived yesterday, when on a tech conference Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, unveiled Windows Azure – internet based computing power and services on a scale that only few can manage.
Let me tell you what this is about - and how, in the end, it is relevant for the development of the internet advertising marketplace.

I have been particularly busy these last few weeks, with the closing of the quarter, internal meetings and a week in the U.S., but this week I could spend some time with my team and finally had a chance to go out into the world once again and meet some people :)
The occasion was the Digital Marketing First trade fair in Tour & Taxis in Brussels. A great venue by the way. We did a presentation there which I have put on Slideshare so all of you can see it.
In this presentation you will find Read on…

According to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard, Apple has chosen to start testing the new iPhone together with partner T-Mobile in Austria “very soon”, although it is not exactly clear when and by how many users.
Personally I think the iPhone is a cool device, but I never really wanted the current version because the internet functionality is just too slow, making it pretty much useless outdoors (unless you want to impress random strangers in bars). This new ‘3G’ iPhone model however, will connect to the internet at a speed that puts a smile on your face.
Phat version :)
According to the well-informed technology gossip blog Engadget, the new iPhone will be Read on…

Accenture’s Global Broadcast Consumer Survey shows that consumers are growing increasingly disenchanted with their overall television experience, but are remaining loyal to their favorite programs.
Although television remains the predominant mass communications device worldwide, with 97 percent of respondents watching TV in a typical week, consumption patterns vary based on a number of factors including geography, age and socio-economic status. While 70 percent of consumers watch four or more television programs a week, 71 percent of them watch programs on four or more television channels.

Great news for mobile advertising: According to a report from The Nielsen Company this month, twenty-three percent (58 million) of all U.S. mobile subscribers say they’ve been exposed to advertising on their phones in the past 30 days. So I guess that means that there is an audience to be reached :)
Half (51% or 28 million) of all data users who recall seeing mobile advertising in the previous 30 days say they responded to a mobile ad.The bi-annual Mobile Advertising Report from Nielsen Mobile, of more than 22,000 active mobile data users, reveals that: Read on…

Since today, Flickr users can add video clips to Flickr, effectively turning the photosharing site into more of a YouTube-type experience - but there is a twist. Adding video is now possible, but Flickr has chosen to aim for a different approach than the current videosharing sites. To make sure that the company does not get into trouble with copyrighted material or long video’s, there is a limit in place that prevents users to upload videos of more than 90 seconds in length. Additionally, there is a 150 MB maximum file size - and you have to be a paying Pro-user.
Suicide?
Although Flickr states that these limitations may be changed later, they are a Read on…

Recorded music seems to continue down its path of devaluation. Since last Friday the new Madonna album “Hard Candy” is being released one-track-per-day to Vodafone subscribers exclusively before the album hits the stores. Effectively becoming a marketing tool for Vodafone Live’s music downloads, Madonna’s music is used to sell more mobile subscriptions and services.
Buy stuff, get music free
But of course you can also use music as a give away to sell more Nokia phones or iPods. This week it became clear that Apple considers launching a music subscription service that would allow iPod owners to listen to all the tracks they want for a one-off fixed fee. Personally I love the idea - if they would combine it with a new 3G capable iPhone it’s a definite killer.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia offcially announced the “Nokia Media Network”. This network consists of a broad range of mobile websites, obviously Nokia’s own properties, but also a selection of well over 50 partners. Nokia will sell advertising space on the mobile pages of this network.
These partners are either network operators or publishers that have a mobile variant of their main website - you should think of well known publishers like Hearst (Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping), Reuters and Discovery, as well as specialist companies like AccuWeather. Going into mobile ad sales may seem a big step for Nokia, but does not come completely unexpected - remember that last year, the company acquired

In 2007 the world just seems to keep getting better for those who are already ahead of the pack. If you can afford to always buy the latest iPod and if you can afford to regularly drink coffees in places where they cost $4.25 like Starbucks, here is some great news for you. Pretty soon you can just sit down in one of Starbucks’ comfy chairs, punch in your order for a Grande Mocchachino on your iPod and get an alert when the hot coffee is ready for you to pick it up at the counter. Now there’s some high tech line-jumping.

I’ve been having some discussions on the next steps for Twitter, specifically on how Twitter could start to make some money. Hate the service or love it, there is a lot of traffic and communication going on in Twitter. However, eventually the venture capitalists that paid for the development of the service so far (Charles River Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Marc Andreessen) are going to want to see some kind of return on their investment. So how could Twitter bring that?

I am hardly the world’s most active Twitter user, I tend to listen (’lurk’) a lot more than actively take part, but I do value the experience. My Twitter channel is like a cafe where I know the regulars. One that is open night and day. Even if I can’t always come in and join the crowd for a beer and a discussion I like to take a peek inside. See what people are talking about.
OK, a lot of the time it is basically the same thing as the chatrooms we’ve known since the 90’s, but there are more ways to connect and take it on the road, and obviously the social networking elements are integrated better.(http://twitter.com/jer00n)

Here’s a smart move by Apple; even though you get the iPhone by becoming an AT&T customer (signing up for a required new, two-year contract), users will not be able to enjoy all of the iPhone’s functionality without syncing the phone with iTunes. This means that apart from becoming an AT&T customer, you will also become an Apple customer in the signup process. This is mandatory because unless you have created an iTunes Account and installed the iTunes software on your computer the iPhone experience will just not be as envisioned.
