Twitter officially not an old folks’ service anymore :)

17 February, 2010

I’ve been discussing this with a couple of people before, but only today did I find hard data to prove it: Twitter is now officially no longer a reservation for the middle aged.

Youngsters catching up.

According to comScore Twitter showed growth Read on

Research: “Free newspapers as good as paid press”

18 January, 2010

Research GlassesAccording to a Dutch study published last month, news users think that within 20 years internet will be the dominant source for news content. Younger respondents think that this will happen faster. TV will be in second place as a source. Newspapers and radio are thought to have faded to mostly insignificant roles in news distribution by 2029.

Losing faith in newspapers.

Of the 13- to 65-year olds 87% claims to use TV as their main source for news today. With significant overlap, 65% mentions internet as a primary source as well. But, according to the study, within 20 years these two should have traded places. By 2029 about 80% of the respondents expects to look for news content on the internet first. 72% expects to still use TV. Newspapers are only mentioned by 37%, down from 59% today. The large majority of respondents does not expect forms of distribution like Twitter and SMS to be still relevant in that timeframe.

Willingness to pay

Younger respondents answer differently to questions about the Read on

U2be: If you can’t go first, go big?

26 October, 2009

U2be

Last night Youtube streamed a live U2 concert from the Rosebowl in California. You can still see the recorded HD stream, which has great quality. The playist can be found here. During the live show, an integrated Twitter widget displayed comments from Twitter that were marked #U2, adding an extra layer of interactivity, which was, though hardly innovative, still nice.

PR machine

So, why is YouTube’s PR machine all over this event? We’ve seen enough live webcasts before, right? The truth is, Youtube is far Read on

WPP: Media Spend on Digital Marketing 20% in 2014

26 September, 2009

20percent According to Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP (the worlds largest communications company by revenue) 20% of marketing budgets will be spent in digital advertising within the next five years.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sorrell said digital budgets would increase significantly in the next few years - but would not fully make up for the difference between share of time spent online and share of marketing spend.

Time spend online to be 30% within five years

“Companies are spending up to 13% on digital. We know we spend up to 20% of our Read on

Twitter on Xbox 360 – it used to be a games console…

30 August, 2009

twitter-xbox

I Twitter a lot more than I blog these days, and when I blog, it often is related to Twitter. I guess it’s a trend.

Kids

And I swear, if I read any more posts about how Twitter is a failure because “only white middle aged men that work in media” use Twitter, and no teenagers do, I will scream. Where exactly was it written that a product needs to be supported by kids to be deemed “a success”? But I digress.

Middle aged men

For all those white middle aged men that also Read on

Research: Which brands ‘get’ social media?

2 August, 2009

Lists are always fun, but this recent study by analyst the Altimeter Group not only ranks the top 100 brands by social media engagement, but also carries some interesting finds for brands not on there – yet :)

The Most Engaged Brands On The Web study scores the engagement level of each of the top 100 brands across more than ten social media channels, including blogs, Facebook, Twitter and discussion forums.

These are companies that are open to the audience, that facilitate the conversation with their customers, that actively listen to the audience, that talk and take feedback about everything from strategic decisions to processes and product features. In short, companies that “get it”

According to the research, the top ten brands are: Read on

Meet the Volkswagens & let your Twitter feed pick your car

24 June, 2009

Volkswagens

Twitter is being integrated everywhere these days, even into advertising. The best example I’ve seen so far is the “Meet the Volkswagens” campaign, developed by VW ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky. Of course, Volkswagen of America ordered 5 TV commercials that feature Max the Beetle as well as a brand new character named BUS…. but that didn’t get me excited.

Enter Twitter

What do I love is the solution that Crispin Porter + Bogusky came up with for online display advertising. Please go and check out Read on

Case: Making money with Twitter

13 June, 2009

dell_logoThis week Dell blogged that it has generated more than 2 million U.S. Dollars in revenue from their Twitter account @DellOutlet. This means that they are up one million since late last year, which was the first time they disclosed some information about Twitter-generated sales.

Growth

Looking at the growth rate it stands to reason that the Twitter related sales on Dell’s sites will probably amount to over 3 million dollars in software, hardware and services in the calendar year 2009. Funny thing is that according to Dell, much of the growing interest in this Dell Twitter account growth was actually not driven by Dell marketing, but by Read on

Why I Twitter

3 May, 2009

TwitterJan-Jaap, a friend (check out his blog here), recently sent me a mail. Basically people told him he should Twitter, but he didn’t understand what he could use Twitter for.

Since I use Twitter, and have been doing so for a while, he asked me what he could get out if it. And because I get that question a lot, I thought I’d post the answer here. I’ll revisit it if new reasons come up, too :)

I use Twitter…

- Because some fun and interesting people that I know professionally also use Twitter, and this way I can follow them.
- Because I noticed that some bloggers that I follow, Twitter a lot these days - and blog a lot less.
- Because I noticed that the quality of Read on
