Research: “Free newspapers as good as paid press”

18 January, 2010

Research GlassesAccording to a Dutch study published last month, news users think that within 20 years internet will be the dominant source for news content. Younger respondents think that this will happen faster. TV will be in second place as a source. Newspapers and radio are thought to have faded to mostly insignificant roles in news distribution by 2029.

Losing faith in newspapers.

Of the 13- to 65-year olds 87% claims to use TV as their main source for news today. With significant overlap, 65% mentions internet as a primary source as well. But, according to the study, within 20 years these two should have traded places. By 2029 about 80% of the respondents expects to look for news content on the internet first. 72% expects to still use TV. Newspapers are only mentioned by 37%, down from 59% today. The large majority of respondents does not expect forms of distribution like Twitter and SMS to be still relevant in that timeframe.

Willingness to pay

Younger respondents answer differently to questions about the Read on

If you can’t afford reporters, use bloggers?

13 October, 2009

Traditional UK newspaper the Guardian will launch “Guardian Local” a digital local news service under the Guardian brand. This will be done by hiring local bloggers to create content, meaning text, photographs, audio and video. The local news service will start in 3 medium-sized UK cities early 2010, with the bloggers reporting on meetings and events within their area.

Experimental

Emily Bell, director of digital development at Guardian News & Media, said, “Guardian Local is our small-scale experimental approach to local newsgathering.” Sarah Hartley of Guardian Local; “This experimental project reflects both the shifting nature of journalism and the reality on the ground.

9 August, 2009

Twitter Internet enabled TV sales are growing rapidly according to reports from Quixel Research (US data). Meaning TV sets that have inbuilt network connectivity via WiFi or network cable. Of course, this means you could be Twittering from your TV set :) Other features range from the ability to display simple RSS feeds and dedicated services to advanced on-screen Widgets for access to Weather, Stock quotes, Youtube etc. The TV sets usually are able to play video files that sit on a Media Center PC or Home Server in the home network as well.

Rapid increase in sales and revenue

Meet the Volkswagens & let your Twitter feed pick your car

24 June, 2009

Volkswagens

Twitter is being integrated everywhere these days, even into advertising. The best example I’ve seen so far is the “Meet the Volkswagens” campaign, developed by VW ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky. Of course, Volkswagen of America ordered 5 TV commercials that feature Max the Beetle as well as a brand new character named BUS…. but that didn’t get me excited.

Enter Twitter

What do I love is the solution that Crispin Porter + Bogusky came up with for online display advertising. Please go and check out Read on

Why I Twitter

3 May, 2009

TwitterJan-Jaap, a friend (check out his blog here), recently sent me a mail. Basically people told him he should Twitter, but he didn’t understand what he could use Twitter for.

Since I use Twitter, and have been doing so for a while, he asked me what he could get out if it. And because I get that question a lot, I thought I’d post the answer here. I’ll revisit it if new reasons come up, too :)

I use Twitter…

- Because some fun and interesting people that I know professionally also use Twitter, and this way I can follow them.
- Because I noticed that some bloggers that I follow, Twitter a lot these days - and blog a lot less.
- Because I noticed that the quality of Read on

Don’t believe the hype – those YouTube losses are 66% exaggerated

9 April, 2009

youtubeLOGO_thumb[1]Last week many blogs broke the news that YouTube is about to lose approximately $470 million in 2009. The reason for this was the “Deep Dive into YouTube” report released on Friday that Credit Suisse analysts Spencer Wang and Kenneth Sena wrote.

The blogosphere echo chamber robbed the news of most of it’s detail and even respectable blogs merrily copied away, tumbling over each other to have the news first. Heck, some even dressed up the story with another $30 virtual millions in cost just to be able to use a $500 million number in the headline.

Challenging

According to Credit Suisse, YouTube is Read on

The Pirate Bay sells out to Warner Brothers

1 April, 2009

WBay

Surprisingly today, after years of hostility & police raids, the Pirate Bay has announced they have settled their differences with US media conglomerate Warner Bros. The largest BitTorrent tracker has sold out to Hollywood and the two have agreed a deal.

The deal, worth over $13 billion (10 billion euros) came about after the recent performance at the Pirate Bay trial gave strong indications that the judgment would go against Warner Bros. For the Hollywood movie studio, it seems that acquiring The Pirate Bay was the only option left.

In the press release, both groups gave Read on

Research: social networkers - and how to charm them :)

14 March, 2009

computer-woman Recently the results of two American studies on social networkers were released by InsightExpress and Netpop. The studies report on participation trends across social networks, as well as on how receptive their members are to advertising. Allow me to summarize the most important findings before moving to a conclusion on what I think the relationship between social networkers and advertisers should look like.

One out of three

The number of social networkers has almost doubled since 2006. Today, 43% of the online population uses social networking sites. 76% of US broadband users (105 million) are active contributors to the web via social media in general. In addition, approximately 29%, or 40 million broadband users, are regular contributors specifically through social networking sites. Most social networkers also use Messenger, texts, blogs and microblogs like Twitter.

Typical users

Social networkers in the US are most likely to be single, employed women, age 18-39. A typical social networker connects weekly with an average of 18 people one-to-one, and 110 people one-to-many. They spend an average of 36% of their online time Read on

Peter Vandermeersch (De Standaard) on the future of newspapers

4 March, 2009

Peter Vandermeersch (De Standaard) 25 minutes ago, Peter Vandermeersch, General Editor in Chief and General Director of Flemish quality newspaper De Standaard and Belgian Marketeer of the year 2008, gave a keynote speech at the Digital News Affairs 2009 event in Brussels. Here is a more or less verbatim version of his story:

First; some facts

Newspaper sales are up for De Standaard and, in fact, all the “quality papers” in Flanders. Populist paper Het Nieuwsblad is declining somewhat. De Standaard reaches about 750.000 Flemish readers daily, or 15% of the populace.

Their newspaper sites are Read on

Your musical taste can reveal how dumb you are

25 February, 2009

music taste chart

Do you like Reggaeton music? Or Gospel? Or Beyonce? Chances are, you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed :) The “Music that makes you dumb” project shows that there is a clear relation between your musical taste and your intelligence. Or at least a relation to your chances to succeed in college, as defined by the average score in the SAT test, a standardized test for U.S. college admissions..

The x-axis represents the SAT score, while the colored boxes indicate either music genre or artist/composer. The chart maps the 133 most popular (out of 1,455) favorites from 1,352 different schools. This image shows the central piece of the chart. Click to enlarge.

YouTube is done sharing and may implode as a result.

21 December, 2008

YouTube TVHere is my prediction for 2009: The major record labels will leave YouTube and start their own video sharing/streaming site. Why? Just take a look at these two messages: Universal Music seeing “Tens of Millions” from YouTube (December 18th 2008) and Warner Music Group disappears from YouTube  (December 20th 2008).

So, that looks weird. Why would Warner leave, if there is so much money to be made? The answer is, they’re not. YouTube is kicking them out. Warner has been trying to come to terms with YouTube on a renewal of the contract that was announced as a “landmark video distribution and revenue partnership” in 2006, but failed to do so. As a consequence, YouTube is removing the Warner clips. But that’s just the beginning.

Something changed

Here is my theory: In 2006, Google was so afraid to lose the Read on

Building a new Home for MSN

Research: Blogging is mainstream, but still badly paid :)

26 November, 2008

Blogosphere Technorati recently released the “State of the Blogosphere 2008″ report. They have surveyed roughly 1300 bloggers, randomly selected from a pool of about 1 million blogs. So, since we all love to read and write about blogging, here are some interesting facts from the report. First of all, let’s look at the business side.

Why blog?

Surprise: the vast majority of surveyed bloggers currently have advertising on their blogs. Among them, the average investment in their blog is about $1,800. The average annual revenue is $6,000. If you would divide the 4000 dollars profit per year by the hours spent, blogging is pretty badly paid work :D However, if you have 100,000 or more unique visitors per month the revenue can get up to the area of 75.000 US dollars. But, of course, there are more reasons to blog :) Read on

Promote yourself online - getting started

9 November, 2008

koffer-big Many people starting their own business in creative professions don’t need to have a fixed work location and just need their laptop as a production facility. In a world where ideas and concepts are currency, this way of working enables a lifestyle that offers a lot of freedom. In principle you can work from all over the world - following seasons, party’s or the hottest events - going wherever you want :)

However, to have a choice of interesting projects to work on, it is important that you make sure people find you easily in the one place you can always be found - the web. Here is a short “how to” post with some tips and advice for people that are just embracing this lifestyle and don’t have that much online experience - yet. I wrote this for a friend originally, but thought it might benefit others, so here you go :)

Google to start paying agencies commission on video advertising

5 November, 2008

NetimperativeAccording to Netimperative, Google is to start paying agencies commission on video advertising in a bid to boost ad revenues from its video properties, including YouTube. Google says it will launch an ‘incentivisation programme’ to demonstrate Google’s commitment in developing video advertising opportunities. The scheme has yet to have a launch date. Google bought YouTube for $1.65m in October 2006, but the video sharing site has so far failed to meet expectations for the search giant in terms of generating ad revenue.

Google will also launch a joint research project with agencies to ascertain how web users are consuming online video. It also plans to develop new ad formats in partnership with clients and ad agencies. According to a Google spokesman: “We believe that online video specifically is going to be the next stage of evolution in the display marketplace“. Read on at the well-informed Netimperative Blog.

Return of the Age of Conversation

30 October, 2008

Age of Conversation 2“Without the art of dialog, the cut and thrust of debate and discussion, the economy of ideas would implode under its own heavy weight. Instead, we engage, share and converse — ideas build upon ideas, discussion grows from seeds of thought and single headlines give rise to a thousand medusa-like creations, echoing words and ideas whispered somewhere on the other side of the planet.”

YouTube and CBS partner to offer full-length shows online

15 October, 2008

CBS logoYouTube has started to offer full-length television shows from the CBS archive in a bid to boost advertising revenues. Titles will be limited to a few shows that are already available on the CBS web site today, including old episodes of Star Trek and Beverly Hills 902010. High urgency content, as it were :)

However, this could be the start of something bigger, as YouTube says it is talking to other networks to offer more programs online. Right now the CBS shows are accessible only within the United States, or worldwide to people that are smart enough to use Hotspotshield

Long form, new player.
