Sorry for this slightly nerdy posting, but this week TechCrunch presented a very interesting take at Google’s social networking plans. Essentially, Google’s grand vision seems to be to turn every Google app into an open, social application. The users of these applications might not notice that they’ve joined a social network, since the basis for the service is essentially not marketed as a service itself but as an underlying platform. The article describes the social networking platform, a so-called “social layer” across applications. Non-Google developers will be able to use this layer and build onto it.
Take it away!
Google will enable these developers to Read on…

Forrester Research hardly ever gets the blame for it, but they played an instrumental role in blowing up the 1st internet bubble in the late 90’s. I have seen a lot of bubble businessplans that based themselves on Forrester reports about the lifetime value of subscribers and customers.
That said, according to a new Forrester Research report released at the Forrester Consumer Forum 2007 in Chicago, interactive marketing spending in the US will more than triple over the next five years, reaching Read on…

The people at the BBC understand how to translate a format to different media types. The latest result? Car fanatics can watch their favorite TV show Top Gear on the Playstation 3 - while they are inside the game world of Gran Turismo 5.
Can you beat the Stig?
Apparently not a single day goes by at Top Gear HQ without someone claiming they can get around their Top Gear Test track faster than famous test driver “The Stig”. Next year, on Playstation 3, everyone will be able to Read on…

Pepsi is going retro this campaign, and has teamed up with the Minisode Network to give it depth with content. New Pepsi bottles and cans with logos from the last century will direct consumers to the site ThrowBackPepsi.com, which really is the Minisode Network channel on Crackle.com, featuring old TV shows.
Russell Weiner, vice president/marketing for Pepsi: “The Minisode Network is a great partner for this design–the combination of our can with this site provides a full nostalgic experience.” Pepsi appears Read on…

Media never disappear. We see new forms added, but there is no substitution. The internet has news, but it is not a newspaper. There is a big difference bewteen sitting at the breakfast table leafing through the paper and sitting behind a screen looking for a quick update, or an in-depth dossier. Finally, even the newspapers are beginning to understand this.
However, the steps taken still do not go far enough. The internet used to Read on…

BSkyB, the UK-based leading European operator of digital television, will no longer allocate new channel slots on its Sky platform. This will undoubtedly lead to bidding battles between companies wanting to gain access to the electronic programming guide(EPG).
Sky announced that it will “cease to take further applications for places in the EPG launch queue” and reconsiders launching the 100 or so TV and radio channels that are waiting. The company is also allocating EPG slots to a select number of channels in the current waiting list. Only those with an already agreed launch date are guaranteed a space.
“After a very careful consideration we have taken the Read on…

The Netherlands was one of the first countries in the world to completely switch off analog TV - it is a cable TV country, and turning to digital TV rapidly. Over a million households watch digital TV today, and the adoption rate is increasing.
The race is on
As in most Western countries the race is on between satellite TV, digital TV from your cable provider, DVB-T (Digitenne) TV or Internet TV from your adsl provider. To enter the market KPN, the Dutch national telecoms provider launches their new offering; Mine, digital TV over adsl. The cable companies set their hopes on seducing customers with the football world championship in HDTV. Tele 2, the pricefighter Telco, has bought the nationall football competition rights for much the same reasons. It is, in fact, a pretty level playing field.
Now, if all of that sounds familiar, it is because this was the situation 17 months ago. Let’s see what went well, what went wrong, and if we can pick a winner. - OK, I will, but in the hope of provoking a discussion :)
