Research: Time spent online - what do we do most, which activities grow fastest?

Research GlassesAbout a year ago, IDC research reported that mature users with an internet connection at home spend more time online (32.7 hours/week) than on any other medium. This is almost half of the total time spent using all media (70.6 hours), almost twice as much time as spent watching television (16.4 hours), and more than eight times as much time as spent reading newspapers and magazines (3.9 hours). And there I was, wondering what “time spent online” actually means. How do these people spend their time online?

Music is a losing game

MGMT Cover ArtThe American year-end music sales figures released by Nielsen SoundScan show that while more music is consumed than ever, actual music sales have never been lower than in 2008. There was an increased number of paid downloads, but that failed to make up for the dive in the sale of compact discs.

Physical album sales fell 20 percent, while digital album sales rose 32 percent. The record of 65.8 million digital albums sold, still slowed down by DRM, could not compensate the loss of CD sales, and as a result total album sales were down 8.5 percent from 2007, for a new all-time low record.
